One of my favourite spots in the country for working out and experiencing some adventure, is The Redwoods Whakarewarewa Forest. From short walks through to longer walks and day hikes, the beauty of this forest is it has a walk or hike for all fitness levels, including young family members.

Last weekend i took the Quarry Track which is a longer walk and highlighted green on the walking trails which start to the right of the main information centre.

This takes you through the nice cruisy walk of the basic tracks, then takes a steep upgrade for a km or so.. Great for the fitness to get your heart pumping and the scenery is breathtaking. As you come through the tall punga ferns take a slight slope down, there it is the beautiful view of Lake Rotorua and beautiful pines, well worth the climb.. I always thought this looked like Canada from the top there the pines and lake in the background are absolutely stunning. Although the trees have grown up alot the view is still amazing and so worth the climb.

Quarry lookout track

4.8km  1hr 30mins

The Quarry Lookout Track is a variation on the Waitawa walk and ventures a bit further into the forest. A stroll through the Redwoods leads you to a short climb through mature Douglas fir, European Larch, Walnut and various species of Eucalypts. The lookout point above the old rhyolite quarry gives a wonderful view over the Redwood Grove, out to Lake Rotorua and the main city centre.

Once you have descended the steps into the Quarry basin you can follow Quarry Rd back down to the Redwoods car park to shorten the walk to about one hour or keep following the green arrows to continue for the full walk.

The Redwoods have also built several tree walks in the area, which are accessed close to the information centre. You can take these day and night. Definitely a must do for families or couples alike. They have just added in a flying fox from the tree walk which would be a nice adrenaline buzz to add to your adventure. A great add on to your walk or visit here.

Much to my surprise, evidence suggests that exposure to forests strengthens our immune system, reduces blood pressure, increases energy, boosts our mood and helps us regain and maintain our focus in ways that treeless environments just don't. Probably the reason why every time I visit this beautiful place i feel rejuvenated and ready to take on the world again.

Definitely one of my favourite places for a variety of fitness and to untap and unwind from the world and busy week.
