Life can get pretty hectic sometimes. Between work, family, looking after the home and trying to fit everything else in, it's no wonder many of us feel stressed and overwhelmed.
I've found over the years that it's often the little things we do each day that make the biggest difference. Reducing stress doesn't always mean taking a holiday or making huge life changes. Sometimes it's simply slowing down, getting outside or taking a few moments just for yourself.
Here are my favourite ways to help reduce stress naturally and bring a little more balance back into everyday life.
1. Spend Time Outdoors
If you've followed my blog for a while, you'll know I absolutely love the outdoors. Whether it's walking along the beach, exploring a new walking track or simply sitting in the sunshine with a coffee, nature always helps me reset.
Fresh air has a wonderful way of calming the mind and lifting your mood just 30 minutes of walking a day can lower stress levels and boost your mood.
2. Get Moving
Exercise doesn't have to mean spending hours at the gym.
A walk around your neighbourhood, a bike ride, Pilates or even dancing around the lounge can help release those feel-good endorphins that naturally reduce stress.
The important thing is to find something you genuinely enjoy.
3. Switch Off From Technology
We're constantly connected these days and sometimes our minds never get a chance to rest.
Try putting your phone away for an hour each evening. Read a book, enjoy a cup of tea or simply sit quietly. You may be surprised how refreshed you feel.
4. Make Time for Self-Care
Self-care isn't selfish—it's essential.
One of my favourite ways to unwind is applying a nourishing face mask, making a green tea and taking 20 minutes just for myself. Looking after your skin and taking time to relax can do wonders for both your body and mind.
5. Practice Deep Breathing
When life feels overwhelming, stop for just a minute and take a breath I find this helps when my minds starts racing.
Take a slow breath in through your nose and breathe out gently through your mouth. Repeat this a few times and you'll often notice your shoulders relax and your mind begin to settle.
Or try the navy box breathing technique to stay focussed in high pressure situations.
Inhale slowly through your nose for a count of 4 seconds.
- Hold your breath for 4 seconds.
- Exhale smoothly through your mouth or nose for 4 seconds.
- Hold with your lungs empty for 4 seconds
6. Get a Good Night's Sleep
Sleep is one of the best natural stress relievers.
Creating a relaxing bedtime routine, limiting screen time before bed read a book before bed and sticking to regular sleep times can make a huge difference to how you feel the next day.
7. Eat Foods That Nourish Your Body
What we eat affects not only our physical health but our mental wellbeing too.
Try to include plenty of fruit, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein in your diet. Drinking enough water throughout the day is equally important.
Healthy eating really does help you feel your best.
8. Spend Time With Positive People
Surround yourself with people who make you laugh, encourage you and bring positive energy into your life.
Sometimes a coffee with a friend or a simple phone call is exactly what we need to brighten our day.
9. Learn to Slow Down
Not everything has to be done today.
It's okay to say no sometimes and give yourself permission to rest. We often put pressure on ourselves to do everything perfectly, but taking a step back can actually help us achieve more in the long run.
10. Remember to Smile
Life isn't always perfect, and that's okay.
Celebrate the little wins, enjoy the simple moments and remember to be kind to yourself. Even on difficult days there's usually something to be grateful for.
Final Thoughts
Stress is something we all experience from time to time, but it doesn't have to control our lives.
For me, spending time outdoors, looking after my health and making self-care part of my weekly routine has made a huge difference to my overall wellbeing.
Start with one small change this week. Whether it's going for a walk, enjoying a relaxing face mask or simply taking ten minutes to yourself, every little step counts.
Take care of yourself—you deserve it.
